Text symbols
Intro to text symbols
Did you know you can put symbols in text using only your keyboard and alt codes?
Start typing keyboard text symbols using Alt codes!
Alt codes are numeric codes you need to type on number pad of your keyboard while holding Alt key in order to input special text symbol characters (you can also input characters present on your keyboard as well).
There really are two good ways for you to write text symbols. You can find out about them in the next section.
Types of text symbols
- First way is using alt codes shown below. Advantages are that there really are some frequently used cool symbols available, like the heart symbol, or music note symbols (witch are damn frequently used on people's facebook/myspace profiles) and there are not only the "cool" ones, but practical ones, like german umlaut text symbols or euro sign and that you can remember the codes (but you probably won't.. I couldn't - it's just not that necessary), so that you'll be able to input those symbols right from your keyboard. But as I said you probably won't so anyway if you'll find some page with symbols you like (maybe this), I really recommend you to bookmark it not to search for times and times again, or just forget about them, trust my experience.
- Second way is copying out Unicode symbols. I have posted in my facebook symbols collection nearly a hundred coolest of these ones and I strongly recommend that you view them. They will amaze you. Those are mostly used for profiles and stuff, not for work and disadvantage is that some of them can't be read on some (but really small part of) systems because some don't have proper prints installed. As time goes the problem fixes as computers get tougher and programmers make those sophisticated prints available by default so that might not be a big problem in the nearby future and all those prints are available in Windows 7. The problem is mostly for XP users. Advantages are that there are the coolest symbols out there. You won't even imagine them looking at this page =)

Steps
If you're using laptop - please, read about laptop alt symbols.
-
Find the code.
Find the numeric code that stands for the symbol you want to write. You can see all possible codes listed in the section below.
-
Enable Num Lock.
On usual keyboards Num Lock is a button located on the right side (on Num Pad). When you'll enable it, the green Num Lock indicator will shine on.
- Press Alt button.
-
Type that code on Num Pad.
Hold Alt key pressed and (while holding) enter the numeric code for the symbol that you want to input. The code needs to be entered on the Numeric Pad - right key pad on usual keyboards.
-
Release Alt key.
If you did everything right then the symbol should have been inserted after you've released the Alt key. If it didn't work when you typed the code while holding right Alt key - try holding the left one.
If something's still wrong - re-read the guide or take a look at my full article on how to do symbols by Alt codes.

* I marked some symbols with red color, because it seems, like I can't type some symbols for some reason. Were there changes in Windows and things now differ, or what? If somebody knows what's going on with Alt codes - please, tell me.
