What ։ means
It closes the sentence; a colon does another job.
Armenian punctuation is documented from the fifth century, though few manuscripts from the fifth through eighth centuries survive; inscriptions and grammar commentaries fill part of the gap. Early marks guided syntax and reading aloud; rules were formalized in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
A 2008 study traces three Armenian marks for the voice's rise and fall to Greek accent signs; Armenian grammar also adapted the model of Dionysius Thrax, a Greek grammarian. This points to Greek influence on the wider system, not a Greek origin for ։.

1Why does ։ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
