What 𑀫 means

Press M in the Mac Brahmi layout.

As of 2026-10-08, the documented Mac Brahmi layout maps M to 𑀫 and F to the virama. The app must support Unicode text, and its font must include Brahmi glyphs.

What sound does 𑀫 represent?

By itself, 𑀫 reads as ma.

It is the consonant m followed by a short, unwritten a vowel. Brahmi consonants carry that vowel by default; a dependent vowel sign changes it, while a virama suppresses it or joins the consonant to the next one.

Prakrit, a group of historical Middle Indo-Aryan languages, and Sanskrit, an ancient Indo-Aryan language, were written in Brahmi. Ashoka, an ancient Indian ruler, left stone proclamations in Brahmi dated 250–232 BCE. Pottery inscriptions from Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, dated 450–350 BCE, may be older evidence.

Where did Brahmi’s later letter forms go?

Brahmi’s regional forms developed into many later writing systems.

These include Devanagari, Tamil, Sinhala, Khmer and Tibetan. The Devanagari म and Tamil ம are corresponding ma letters in two of those scripts; each has its own modern shape and Unicode identity.

Questions people ask

2

Why does Brahmi ma look different in Old Tamil?

It can. In Old Tamil text, this same encoded letter may have a distinct glyph variant. Some Old Tamil orthographies also handle the inherent vowel differently.

Why might 𑀫 not display in an app?

The app must support Unicode text, and the selected font must include Brahmi glyphs. Without both, the character may not display correctly.

Why is 𑀫 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
