Brahmi letter vocalic rr

13/115

𑀌 is the standalone Brahmi letter for Sanskrit’s long syllabic r: the r sound forms its own syllable. Sanskrit written in Latin letters commonly shows it as ṝ. It marks one vowel, not doubled r consonants, and appears in a narrow corner of Sanskrit grammar. After a consonant, Brahmi uses a separate attached vowel sign.

What 𑀌 means

In Sanskrit, it is the long counterpart of the syllabic-r vowel.

Sanskrit treats ṛ as a syllabic r vowel; ṝ is its longer form. The long form appears in a narrow set of grammatical forms, including certain plurals of noun stems ending in ṛ. So 𑀌 marks one rare vowel sound, not two r consonants.

Early Brahmi inscriptions were predominantly in Prakrit. Dated sherds at Anuradhapura attest Brahmi by the beginning of the fourth century BCE; the Aśokan edicts are the earliest decipherable inscriptions in India, from the third century BCE. Sanskrit became the predominant language of Indian epigraphy by the fourth century CE. A Unicode proposal says rare independent vowels and their dependent signs hardly appear in ordinary written texts.

Standalone letter or attached vowel sign?

Write 𑀌 on its own; the attached sign goes with a consonant.

An independent vowel letter stands by itself. A dependent vowel sign attaches to a consonant, so it cannot replace the independent letter. Do not reconstruct the sign’s syllable by combining a consonant, virama, and 𑀌.

Brahmi letter shapes changed across its Old, Middle, and Late periods. A font’s outline reflects a script style, not one frozen ancient drawing.

How do I type the exact letter?

Enter U1100C as a hexadecimal value in a Unicode picker. If the letter appears as a box, choose a font with Brahmi coverage; the text may already be correct.

Specialist and archival: it points to Sanskrit-oriented writing, inscription study, or historical-script work.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𑀌 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Brahmi block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
