carian letter i

Carian Letter I

26/49

A Unicode-aware character picker is the simplest way to enter 𐊹 once; repeated Carian text needs a Carian-capable keyboard and font. Carian i is a vowel sign conventionally written with Latin i, roughly like the “ee” in “machine.” A lone 𐊹 is best read as Carian-script text or a font check.

What 𐊹 means

For a single insertion, look for Carian in a Unicode-aware picker. Repeated Carian writing calls for a Carian-capable keyboard and a font that contains Carian glyphs; the keyboard alone cannot supply missing font shapes.

What sound does Carian i represent?

It marks a vowel conventionally written as Latin i. In English, that is roughly the “ee” sound in “machine.” Latin i is a way to write the reconstructed Carian sound in another alphabet, not the Carian sign itself.

When was Carian writing used?

Carian writing belongs to first-millennium BCE Anatolia. The earliest securely dated local trace is a short inscription scratched on a wine jug at Hydai, from the last quarter of the 7th century BCE. An inscription written in both Carian and Egyptian appears on a statuette of Neith, an Egyptian goddess, and is dated to Psammetichus I’s reign, 664–610 BCE.

Before the end of the 5th century BCE, Carian writing appears mainly in religious and funerary settings. Much of the surviving writing comes from Egypt: inscriptions on religious offerings and burials, graffiti, and writing by Carian communities serving as mercenaries. Later coin inscriptions and decrees show civic and administrative use. In the 4th century BCE, Greek increasingly took over public and official roles while Carian remained part of local identity.

Carian has a historical connection to Greek, but the source of 𐊹 is unsettled. Proposals include archaic Greek Ei, the Greek letter sequence ΕΙ (epsilon plus iota), or Eta Η. These are competing origin proposals; they do not make Carian and Greek letters interchangeable.

Historical and specialist: using 𐊹 signals Carian-script text, inscription study, or a font check.

For an inscription, Latin i is a transliteration, not a substitute for 𐊹.

Why does 𐊹 appear as a square?

A font or app without Carian glyph coverage usually shows a missing-glyph square. In a 2025 Keyman community support thread, a user reported that selecting the Catrinity font fixed the boxes in Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator.
