Clock emoji in order: all 24 clock faces
There is a clock face for every hour, , and one for every half hour, . All 24 were added in Unicode 6.0 in 2010, the release that brought most emoji into the standard. Their official names are plain: Clock Face One O'Clock, Clock Face One-Thirty and so on. The symbol grid above runs in clock order, so you can read it like a dial: on the hour in one row, half past in the next.
Because the faces have no numbers on most platforms, can mean 3 am or 3 pm, 15:00 or just "three". People use them to name a time in a message without typing digits: "meet at ?", "call me around ". does double duty as noon and midnight, and is the one to reach for when lunch is at half twelve. There is no face for quarter past or quarter to; for 9:15 you pick the nearer one, or , or write the digits.
A row of faces in sequence, , reads as time passing, a countdown or a long wait; the same faces scattered, , suggest a schedule that is all over the place. On Apple, Google, Samsung and WhatsApp the faces are white dials with dark hands; on Microsoft they have a blue rim. Only the hands change from face to face, so at small sizes and are easy to mix up. Check the slug or the name when the exact time matters.
Alarm clock, watch, hourglass, stopwatch and timer: which one to use
alarm clock is the morning emoji: wake-up calls, reminders, "set your alarm", and by extension anything with a hard deadline. watch is a wristwatch, so it means "what time is it", punctuality, or simply the accessory itself; Apple draws it as an Apple Watch, Samsung and Google as a classic watch with a strap. stopwatch is for timing something: a race, a lap, a speed run, a challenge. timer clock is a kitchen timer, so it says cooking, a Pomodoro study block or "you have ten minutes". mantelpiece clock is the ornate, old one, used for nostalgia, history, grandparents' houses and "back in the day".
The two hourglasses are a pair. hourglass not done has sand still running, which is why it means waiting, loading, pending and "in progress"; it is also the standard "hold on, still working on it" reply. hourglass done has all the sand at the bottom: time is up, the deadline has passed, the offer has ended. On Snapchat the hourglass appears next to a friend's name when a Snapstreak is about to expire, roughly four hours before the 24-hour window closes, which is where many people first met it.
and are much older than the rest. They entered Unicode in 1993 as technical symbols, long before emoji existed; and followed in Unicode 6.0 (2010), and were added to the same block of technical symbols in Unicode 6.0 and became emoji in 2015, and arrived with the Wingdings-derived symbols of Unicode 7.0 in 2014. That history explains why show as colour emoji everywhere, while sometimes render as small black-and-white glyphs unless the emoji variation selector is attached.
Time emoji for waiting, running late and "soon"
Most time emoji in real chats are not clocks at all. SOON arrow is "on my way" and "coming soon"; BACK arrow is a throwback or "be right back"; END arrow closes a story. person standing is the awkward wait, person running and dashing away mean "running late, hurrying". For a slow reply or a process that takes forever there are three speeds of slow: snail, turtle and sloth. is a pause or a break, skips ahead ("fast forward to Friday"), rewinds to the past, and is a routine that repeats every day.
A clock emoji on its own usually means one of three things: a time is being proposed ( seven o'clock), someone is waiting ( or "still waiting") or the clock is ticking on a decision ( ). "Clock emoji meaning from a guy" and "from a girl" are the same: read it with the words around it. asks for a reply, means "I'll wait for you", is a memory. The one slang sense worth knowing is clock it, the ballroom and drag term for noticing and calling out something, which went viral on TikTok in 2023; people pair it with or and , as in " clocked".
and are the refresh arrows, and in text they stand for loading, syncing or "doing it again". infinity is the opposite end of the scale: forever, always, no time limit. bell is the reminder itself, the notification that goes off when the time comes; see Play, Pause & Media Button Symbols for the rest of the family and Arrow Symbols for every other arrow.
Clock symbol text: black-and-white clocks that work anywhere
If you need a clock symbol in a document, a plain-text bio or a place where colour emoji look wrong, use the text forms. and have a text presentation in most fonts: follow them with the invisible text variation selector UFE0E ( ) and they render as small monochrome glyphs in the colour of the surrounding text. without the emoji selector do the same by default on many systems. There is no monochrome clock face for –; they only exist as emoji.
Two more hourglasses come from the mathematical blocks and are text symbols everywhere: white hourglass and black hourglass, both added in Unicode 3.2 in 2002 for use in logic and typesetting. is the plain infinity sign ( is its emoji twin). For a loading-spinner look in text, the circle arrows draw a rotation in one character and are what many apps' loading icons are based on. More of these live in Arrow Symbols and Math Symbols.
On WhatsApp the small clock you see beside a message is not an emoji but a status icon: it means the message is still pending and has not left your phone, usually because of a dropped connection. The grey tick replaces it once the message is sent.
Calendar emoji and times of day
Dates belong next to times. calendar shows a single date page and means an appointment, a deadline or "save the date"; tear-off calendar is the daily kind, used for "today" and day counts; spiral calendar is the planner or schedule. On Apple shows July 17, the date Apple first announced iCal, and the reason July 17 became World Emoji Day. Months, weekdays and planners get their own page, Calendar & Month Emoji.
For a time of day without a clock, use the sky: sunrise and sunrise over mountains for early morning, sunset and cityscape at dusk for evening and golden hour, night with stars and crescent moon for late night. These are the usual stand-ins in "good morning" and "good night" messages (see Good Morning & Good Night Emoji) and in schedules: run, work, walk, sleep. The sun and the eight moon phases have their own collections, Sun Emoji & Symbols and Moon Emoji & Symbols.
