Ndebele Alphabet

The Ndebele alphabet, as Zimbabwe's North Ndebele (isiNdebele) is written, is the ordinary Latin alphabet without r and without a single accent, so every letter is already on your keyboard. What makes it look Ndebele are the three click letters c, q and x and spellings like gq, xh, hl and dl; below are the letters to copy, how the clicks sound, where the language is spoken in Zimbabwe , and greetings such as Salibonani and Ngiyabonga.

The Ndebele alphabet: 25 letters, no accents

North Ndebele, isiNdebele in the language itself, is written with the Latin letters a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q s t u v w x y z, each in capital and small form, as in the symbol grid above. Native Ndebele words have no r sound, so the alphabet has no r, and borrowed words often take an l instead, the way the language turns many English loans into Ndebele shape. R still turns up in some names and borrowings, and Ndebele writers debate whether it belongs in the alphabet, so it is left out of the grid.

There are no accented letters. The five vowels a e i o u sound roughly as in Spanish or Italian, and although Ndebele is a tonal language, like Zulu and the other Nguni languages, standard spelling does not mark tone. A Ndebele text can therefore be typed on any English keyboard or phone and pasted anywhere without special characters.

Several sounds are written with two or three letters. hl is a breathy l, made by blowing air past the sides of the tongue, as in ukuhlala, to sit or stay; dl is its voiced partner, as in ukudla, food. bh is an ordinary b, while a plain b stands for a softer sound made by drawing air inward, as in ubaba, father. ng, ny and tsh round out the common combinations.

Ndebele clicks: c, q and x

The letters that surprise English readers are c, q and x, which in Ndebele never have their English sounds: each stands for a click, as in Zulu and Xhosa. c is the dental click, the soft tsk-tsk of disapproval made with the tongue tip behind the front teeth. q is the sharper, hollow pop made by pulling the tongue down from the roof of the mouth, as in iqanda, egg. x is the lateral click, the sound some riders make to urge on a horse, with the side of the tongue, as in ixoxo, frog, and ukuxoxa, to chat.

Each click comes in several versions, shown by the letters written with it: an h after it means a breathy click (ch, qh, xh, as in ixhegu, old man), a g before it a voiced one (gc, gq, gx, as in ukugqoka, to get dressed), and an n before it a nasal one (nc, nq, nx, as in inqola, wagon). This is why school lists of "Ndebele words with gq" and "words with xh" exist: learners practise one click group at a time.

Typing them needs nothing special: the clicks are plain c, q and x, and the combinations are just those letters next to g, h or n.

How to type Ndebele, capitals and punctuation

Ndebele has one spelling habit worth knowing: when a prefix is attached to a name, the prefix stays small and the name keeps its capital letter in the middle of the word. So the language is isiNdebele, the people amaNdebele, "in Bulawayo" is eBulawayo, and "in Zimbabwe" eZimbabwe. Phone keyboards sometimes "correct" these, so they are worth checking before posting.

Punctuation follows English practice: the comma, full stop, ? and !, with double curly quotes “ ” and single ones ‘ ’ inside them. On Windows they are Alt0147, Alt0148, Alt0145 and Alt0146 on the number pad; on a Mac Option[, OptionShift[, Option] and OptionShift]. Phones and word processors usually curl straight quotes on their own.

Money is written as it is in the rest of Zimbabwe: most prices are in US dollars, with the ordinary sign, beside the ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold), introduced in 2024, which has no dedicated Unicode currency symbol; ZiG is the currency name, while ZWG is its ISO code.

Where the Ndebele language is spoken: Matabeleland and Bulawayo

North Ndebele is the language of south-western Zimbabwe : the provinces of Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South and the city of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second-largest city. CLDR, Unicode's locale data, estimates about 2.1 million speakers, and it is also used as a second language by other Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe's 2013 constitution names Ndebele among the country's sixteen officially recognised languages, and it is taught in schools and used on radio, in newspapers and in churches.

The language came north with Mzilikazi, a commander who broke away from Shaka's Zulu kingdom in the 1820s and led his followers across the Highveld to settle in what is now south-western Zimbabwe in the late 1830s. His son Lobengula, the last Ndebele king, founded Bulawayo as his capital; the city is still called the City of Kings , and Mzilikazi is buried in the granite Matobo Hills south of it. The name Matabele, kept in Matabeleland, is the Sotho-Tswana form of the word Ndebele.

Neighbouring languages of Zimbabwe each have their own collection here: Shona, Kalanga, Tswana, Venda, Ndau, Manyika and Nyanja, and so does Zimbabwe with its flag and emoji.

North and South Ndebele, Zulu and the Nguni family

Ndebele belongs to the Nguni group of Bantu languages with Zulu, Xhosa and Swati, and it is so close to Zulu that speakers of the two understand each other with little effort; many words are identical, and the clicks, the hl and dl sounds and the prefix system are shared. Differences show in vocabulary and in some sounds and spellings, and Ndebele has borrowed words from Shona, its large neighbour.

South Ndebele, spoken in South Africa, shares the name but is a separate language with its own history and spelling; traditional Ndebele hut painting is also practiced in Zimbabwe, including in Matobo District. Both have a collection here: North Ndebele on this page, South Ndebele on its own, beside Zulu, Xhosa and Swati.
