cypriot syllable se

Cypriot Syllable Se

39/55

𐠩 is a sign from the Cypriot syllabary, an ancient script for writing Greek — a letter, not an emoji mood. Mid-word it reads “se”; at a word ending it can spell /s/ with the e silent. The script grew out of the older Cypro-Minoan tradition and outlived it as a marker of Cypriot identity.

What 𐠩 means

Both — its place in the word decides.

The script is built from open-syllable signs — consonant plus vowel — so 𐠩 normally writes se in a running sequence. At the end of a word, scribes used the same sign for bare /s/ and left the e unspoken; one attested spelling writes the final s of the Greek name Stasandros exactly that way.

If someone sends 𐠩 alone today, read it as a script sample or a bit of ancient-writing flair — there is no hidden mood to decode.

Where did the sign come from?

It grew out of Cypro-Minoan, the island's older undeciphered script.

An inscription from Palaepaphos-Skales dated to the 11th century BCE is the earliest proposed evidence; the main documented corpus runs from the 8th to the 3rd or 2nd century BCE, and its everyday job was writing Cypriot Greek.

As the Greek alphabet spread, use narrowed to the Kafizin sanctuary's pottery dedications of 183–177 BC, Nea Paphos sealings, and marking Cypriot identity.

How is 𐠩 related to Linear B?

It shares a family history, but it is not the same script.

The Cypriot syllabary is related to both Linear B — the earlier syllabic script of Mycenaean Greek — and Cypro-Minoan, whose language remains unidentified; it is a cousin, not the same system. Cypriot writing usually ran right to left, and on screen each sign depends on font coverage.

Specialist or decorative in modern messages; how it looks depends on font coverage.

Word-finally the e can go silent — don't automatically read “se”.

Why does 𐠩 show as a box or replacement glyph?

Font coverage. The character is valid, but few fonts carry the Cypriot block, so an unsupported system draws a box.

Who writes with the Cypriot syllabary today?

Nobody, in daily life — the script died out in antiquity; as of 2026 it survives in editions, fonts, and decorative reuse.
