What ӿ means
ӿ writes Nivkh’s h-like sound. Slashes show a sound, not letters to type. Nivkh also uses Х for /x/ and ӽ for /χ/: these are distinct sounds, and substituting ӿ for Х can change a word.
Nivkh literacy took shape in stages
Nivkh vocabulary material was published by 1857. The first Amur alphabet was developed in 1931, followed by a Latin primer in 1932. A switch to Cyrillic was decided in 1937; a further Cyrillic alphabet followed in 1953, then Amur and Sakhalin versions in 1979. The work supported teaching and publishing in Nivkh.
In Nivkh, ӿ is an ordinary alphabet letter, not a stylistic form.
Do not substitute Х: it writes a different sound, and a word can change.
