What ꙋ means
Both spell the [u] vowel, but they are different written forms.
The monograph uk is a compact, joined form related to оу, the two-letter spelling used in Christian Slavic books. Read ꙋ as “uk,” pronounced [u]; the о in оу does not add another spoken vowel.
Why do оу and ꙋ appear in different places?
Church Slavonic spelling convention depends partly on word position.
In a later standardized convention, оу is used at the beginning of a word, while ꙋ is used in the middle or at the end. Older manuscripts and regional traditions are less uniform, so spelling can reflect the source’s tradition as well as its vowel.
Old Church Slavonic Christian translations were first written in Glagolitic. Cyrillic emerged soon afterward in Bulgaria and carried that literary tradition into later books; early Cyrillic witnesses date to the 10th–11th centuries.
Why does ꙋ look different in some fonts?
A superscript can make a font show a shortened form of ꙋ.
In Synodal Church Slavonic typography, a following superscript letter can trigger this contextual shape. It changes the glyph’s appearance, not the encoded character. A font without the relevant shaping may show a simpler form or a missing-glyph box.
Specialist and liturgical: ꙋ points to Church Slavonic writing, old-Cyrillic study, or a historical text.
When transcribing a source, keep ꙋ as written; replacing it with у changes the historical spelling.
