Egyptian Hieroglyph E014

𓃡 is a dog or hound sign in Egyptian writing. It usually follows a word silently, helping classify its meaning instead of forming a statement. Its exact drawing depends on the font.

Text symbol

What 𓃡 means

It marks words for dog or hound.

E14 is the sign-list label for this form. It can function as a determinative: a silent sign placed after a word to clarify its meaning. Egyptologists connect it with the written forms iw (“dog”) and ṯsm (“hound”); these scholarly spellings are not pronunciation guides.

Its form is associated with the upright-eared, curled-tail dog prominent in Old Kingdom imagery. The oldest dog expressions discussed in scholarship date to the Old Kingdom; the sign's practical job was to help readers identify dog-related words.

Is this the Anubis sign?

No. E14 is the standing dog or hound sign.

Anubis, an Egyptian deity, is associated with E15, a jackal shown lying down. Both signs depict animals from the dog family, but they have different roles.

Scholars differ over how broadly to read the Egyptian word ṯsm in later periods. Some limit it to the upright-eared, curled-tail dog shown by E14; others also apply it to lean hunting dogs, guard dogs, companions, or dogs more generally. This debate does not identify a modern breed.

Why does 𓃡 look different when typed?

The font draws it; layout controls arrange it.

Unicode encodes this as a basic text character, and a font supplies its drawing. Separate controls can join signs horizontally, stack them, place one over another, or set their direction. If the sign appears as an empty box, the active font may not include Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Historical and specialist: it points to Egyptian writing or ancient-Egypt interest, not an everyday dog reaction.

Alone, it can look like decoration or an untranslated inscription; add a plain-language caption for general readers.

Your font may not include Egyptian hieroglyphs. Choose one with coverage for the script; the box is a display problem, not a different sign.
