Egyptian Hieroglyph E025

240/1072

𓃯 is an ancient Egyptian hippopotamus sign: it can write the animal's name or classify a related word. Sent alone, it points to a hippo or Ancient Egypt, but says little about a specific idea. In Egyptian imagery, the same animal could stand for danger overcome by a king or protection around mothers and children.

What 𓃯 means

It is the Egyptian hippopotamus sign, used to write the animal's name or classify a related word. A sign that writes a whole word is called a word sign; a silent sign that groups a word by meaning is a determinative. Egyptologists catalogue it as Gardiner E25.

Egyptian art shows hippo hunts in the Predynastic period (ca. 4400–3100 BCE). A First Dynasty entry on the Palermo Stone, a record of royal events, is read as King Den spearing a hippopotamus. The hunt made the animal part of a story about royal power and overcoming disorder.

What does 𓃯 mean when someone sends it?

A lone send points to a hippo or Ancient Egypt, but not one exact idea. An Egyptology reader may recognize Gardiner E25 and its writing roles; someone unfamiliar with the script may see only an animal sign.

Add context if you mean a specific historical or religious idea.

Why could a hippo mean danger or protection?

The surrounding scene changes what the hippo represents. Royal hunt scenes cast the animal as a danger the king defeats. Egyptian imagery also linked the hippo to Seth from the New Kingdom (ca. 1550–1070 BCE), giving it a negative force in that setting.

Because hippos live in the Nile and disappear beneath its water before resurfacing, Egyptian imagery could connect them with renewal and rebirth. Female hippos' protectiveness was echoed in Taweret and Ipet, goddesses who guarded mothers and children. Those are meanings of the wider imagery, not a translation of the bare sign.

Scholarly or decorative; a lone send needs context for a precise reading.

Protection belongs to Taweret's or Ipet's scene, not to this sign alone.
