What 𓃹 means
It writes the two Egyptian consonants Egyptologists transcribe as wn. A phonogram is a picture-sign used for its sound. Here, the hare supplies those consonants, so the surrounding signs help identify the word.
The oldest cited examples are in the late Old Kingdom Pyramid Texts, royal funerary writings associated with the kings Unas and Pepi I. The same phonogram appears in Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom examples, including names and clauses; Pyramid Text formulas were reused in later burial settings.
Why does E34 spell wn?
The hare’s Egyptian name supplied the consonants for a sound-sign. Egyptian writing used picture-signs for sounds as well as for things. E34 could therefore spell a word that was not about a hare.
The same consonant group occurs in spellings translated as “open” and “hurry” or “pass by”; the full spelling identifies the word.
The Egyptian noun for “desert hare” is attested in records dated 664–526 BCE. A later form in Demotic—a later Egyptian script—is recorded in 201–250 CE.
This is mainly an Egyptology reading aid: it belongs in hieroglyphic spellings, sign lists, and deliberate ancient-Egypt references.
The hare picture does not make every word mean “hare”; read the signs together.
