Elbasan was the earliest alphabet devised for Albanian, created around 1750 for Albanian Christian writing. Its surviving manuscript is the Elbasan Gospel (Anonimi i Elbasanit, “Anonymous of Elbasan”), a handwritten book of Gospel texts dated 1761. Most letter shapes seem original; some may reflect Greek or Cyrillic influence.
Elbasan vs Todhri: are they the same?
No. They are separate historical Albanian alphabets. Todhri was used in central Albania. After Albanian standardized its Latin alphabet in 1909, Elbasan ceased to be its everyday script.
