Imperial Aramaic Letter Samekh

15/31

𐡎 is samekh, the Imperial Aramaic letter for the /s/ sound. It lives inside right-to-left Aramaic words; on its own it reads as a script specimen, not a message. Its lineage runs from Phoenician through Imperial Aramaic to square Hebrew, Syriac, and Nabataean.

What 𐡎 means

The consonant /s/, inside a right-to-left Aramaic word. It is one of the 22 consonants of the Aramaic alphabet, so the real reading comes from the word around it.

Without a word around it, the practical reading is “this letter” — a citation or specimen, not a whole word and not a mood.

How did Imperial Aramaic samekh develop?

It evolved with the alphabet rather than being invented. Aramaic writing grew out of the Phoenician alphabet — early Aramaic inscriptions of the ninth and eighth centuries BCE still use Phoenician-looking letters, and distinctly Aramaic forms are clear by the mid-eighth century BCE.

Its job was paperwork. Aramaic became an administrative language under the Assyrian and then the Achaemenid empires, and Egyptian archives from the fifth century BCE preserve letters, contracts, legal briefs, and literary texts. This is a working letter in a documentary tradition, not the product of a single inventor.

Which scripts are related to samekh?

Its relatives are descendant scripts, not interchangeable code points. Its letterforms fed into square Hebrew, Syriac, Nabataean, and several Middle Persian scripts; Hebrew ס and Syriac ܣ continue the same letter.

The /s/ value survived everywhere; the stories around it did not. Rabbinic tradition says the closed samekh, carved clean through the stone tablets, stayed in place only by a miracle, while Arabic writes the comparable /s/ with a different letter, sīn (س). Local Aramaic scripts began branching off in the third and second centuries BCE.

Scholarly and script-focused; on its own it reads as a specimen, not casual chat.

Why does 𐡎 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
