What Ē means
It marks a long vowel in Māori. That length can distinguish words, so the macron is part of the spelling. Māori calls the mark a tohutō; pōtae (“hat”) is an informal name for the bar.
Latvian also uses lowercase ē as part of its spelling.
Keep the bar
Macron display was widely supported by the early 2000s. Earlier Māori digital writing sometimes substituted umlauts or used custom fonts; an old umlaut may be a workaround.
Use the bar when the source spelling requires it.
Removing it can change a Māori word.
