What Ɡ means
It marks the same hard g sound as ɡ in capitalized IPA text. That is the consonant at the start of “go”: the back of the tongue closes against the soft palate, then releases while the voice is on.
The International Phonetic Association began in 1886, and its first published alphabet followed in 1888 to help language teachers show pronunciation. The alphabet later served linguistic description, speech science, and clinical work. A Unicode proposal in 2011 identified Ɡ as the uppercase counterpart of ɡ for capitalized and small-cap transcription; small capitals are uppercase letters set at lowercase height.
Why isn’t Ɡ just G?
Ordinary G is not the uppercase form of IPA ɡ.
Keyboard g is a different character. Its lowercase shape can be single- or double-storey depending on the font; IPA ɡ specifies the single-storey form. Substituting keyboard g for ɡ changes the character stored in transcription data.
A specialist phonetics sign; outside transcription, readers may take it for a stylized capital G.
Use ordinary G in words; Ɡ marks an IPA transcription.

Questions people ask
1Why might Ɡ appear as a box?
A missing font glyph is the usual cause. Unicode preserves the character, but the font and rendering system must support a glyph for it to display.
