What ě means
This Czech e follows a pattern set by the consonant before it. In dě, tě, ně, the consonant softens; in bě, pě, vě, fě, a y sound follows; in mě, a soft n sound follows m. Replacing ě with e can change a Czech word.
Czech spelling moved from two-letter forms to marked letters
In early 14th-century Czech, ie and ye represented sounds now written ě, filling gaps in the Latin alphabet. In the 15th century, marked letters joined those older two-letter spellings.
