What does ê mean in a word?
Its job depends on the language. In French, ê is an accented e whose pronunciation depends on the word. Vietnamese treats ê as a letter that can take an additional tone mark. Portuguese uses the circumflex to mark a stressed e sound; Welsh uses it to mark a long vowel.
Why can identical-looking ê letters fail to match?
They may use different sequences underneath. ê can be stored as one character, or as e followed by a combining circumflex mark. They can look the same, but a literal sequence comparison may distinguish them. Unicode normalization puts equivalent sequences into a consistent form before exact matching; removing the accent changes the spelling.

Questions people ask
1Why does ê show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
