Linear A sign A340

129/341

As of 2026, 𐚀 has no agreed translation: A340 is the catalogue label for a sign in Linear A, the undeciphered Minoan script. The script’s earliest known evidence comes from Crete by the end of the nineteenth century BCE; it appears in records and on ritual or status-bearing objects. Linear B descends from it.

What 𐚀 means

A340 is a catalogue identifier, not a deciphered word. As of 2026, Linear A remains undeciphered. Some signs are conventionally transliterated with Linear B values, but those values do not automatically transfer to Linear A.

Linear A combines syllable signs, word signs, numerals, and ligatures (signs joined into one form), so a mark’s role can depend on its sequence and setting. A340 tells a scholar which sign is meant; it does not say whether it stood for a syllable, a word, or another value.

Why was Linear A written?

Linear A served Cretan administration and ritual settings. Its earliest known evidence belongs to Middle Minoan IIA, by the end of the nineteenth century BCE. Some earlier material has been proposed as a precursor, but that interpretation is disputed. Early clay tablets tracked goods and storeroom movements; the script also appears on vessels, metal objects, and other materials.

In archives, it recorded economic activity. On stone offering tables and objects from ritual or burial contexts, formulaic writing could take part in ritual and mark status. Those settings show what the writing was doing, not what A340 itself meant.

Which scripts share a history with Linear A?

Linear B descends from Linear A; links to Cyprus are less certain. Linear B, a later script used to write Greek, carries forward much of Linear A’s syllable-sign system. Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan script used earlier or around the same time, shares forms with Linear A; as of 2026, their direct family relationship remains unresolved. Cypro-Minoan and later Cypriot syllabaries also show points of contact with this writing tradition, though their precise relationship to Linear A remains uncertain.

These connections help place the writing tradition; they do not decode A340.

Historical and specialist; in an ordinary modern message, it reads as a specimen of the script.

Do not treat A340 as the letter A or invent a translation.
