linear a sign a353

Linear A Sign A353

142/341

𐚍 is an undeciphered Linear A sign: no secure word or sound is known for A353 in the surviving Linear A corpus. Today it appears as a digital character for that ancient sign, not as a readable Minoan word. Linear A served record-keeping and ritual in Bronze Age Crete; A353’s earliest published attestation is Middle Minoan II material from Phaistos, a site on Crete.

What 𐚍 means

No secure sound or meaning is known. A353’s earliest published attestation is in Middle Minoan II material from Phaistos, a site on Crete. It is listed among signs otherwise unattested in the surviving Linear A corpus. One recorded example tells us where the sign appears, not what a Minoan reader said.

Linear A remains undeciphered. Its signs represent syllables and whole words, but that does not make this isolated sign a translatable word. Treat any proposed reading as a hypothesis.

Why was Linear A used?

Linear A served practical record-keeping and ritual writing. Its signs appear on clay tablets, small clay discs called roundels, and clay seal impressions used in administration, as well as on stone, metal, and vessels in ritual or practical contexts. These uses explain the script’s role, not whether A353 named an item, deity, or syllable.

Is Linear A related to Linear B?

The scripts are historically connected, but that does not decode A353. Linear B reused much of Linear A’s set of signs, so shared shapes can sometimes suggest syllabic readings. In the sign lists, A353 has no secure Linear B value; “A353” is a catalogue label, not a Greek translation.

Cretan Hieroglyphic is another writing system used on Crete. Comparing the shapes and history of the signs has led some scholars to argue that a substantial part of Linear A’s set was adapted from it; how Aegean scripts developed remains debated. This script-level connection does not establish A353’s meaning.

In modern text, this is an ancient-script character, not a word with an established everyday meaning.

Do not present a guessed Minoan reading as settled.

Why does 𐚍 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Linear A block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
