Linear A Sign A371

160/341

𐚟 is a Linear A sign with no securely known sound or meaning. In modern catalogues, A371 identifies a sign from a Bronze Age script used on Crete and across the Aegean. A 2016 overview classifies A340–A371 among hapax signs—each is recorded once in the surviving material.

What 𐚟 means

Its sound and meaning are not securely known. As of 2026, a specialist Linear A sign list gives A371 no transliteration or gloss.

Linear A itself remains undeciphered. Its signs may represent syllables, whole words or accounting marks, or combine into single written forms; A371 has no secure reading in any of those roles.

How did A371 enter the record?

As of 2026, A371’s exact ancient context is unknown. Secure Linear A evidence begins in Middle Minoan IIA, a period on Crete, by the end of the nineteenth century BCE. The earliest seals from Archanes are disputed: some researchers classify them as Linear A, while others assign them to an older Cretan script.

Linear A was probably developed on Crete and used chiefly for record-keeping. Most surviving inscriptions are administrative records of goods moving into and out of storage; texts on offering vessels and objects used in worship or burial point to formulaic religious writing as well. Linear A spread across the Aegean, and Linear B later adapted much of its written sign repertoire to record a different language. The last known Linear A evidence is from around 1350 BCE. A single surviving record of A371 gives no basis for tracing a change in its meaning.

Which signs are historically connected to Linear A?

Linear A has documented links to two other Aegean writing systems. Cretan Hieroglyphic is another writing system from Crete. Scholars disagree about how directly it shaped Linear A: one analysis argues that much of Linear A’s sign set was adapted from it; another cautions that a small overlap among signs for syllables does not prove direct descent. The link between Linear A and Linear B is clearer: Linear B reused much of Linear A’s written sign set for a different language.

As of 2026, no specific sign from either system is established as A371’s predecessor or counterpart. The A-series number is a catalogue label; neighboring numbers do not show that signs are a family.

A371 is a catalogue label, not a translated Minoan word.
