Linear A Sign A508

186/341

Linear A sign A508, also listed as GORILA A508, has no secure reading: its ancient word and sound are unknown. The sign appears in Late Minoan IB lists of agricultural goods around Ayia Triadha, so its clearest setting is Minoan record-keeping. Saffron is one proposal; a 2025 study also considers a vessel shape, and neither reading is settled.

What 𐚹 means

A508 has no known ancient meaning or sound. Linear A is the Bronze Age writing system of the Minoans; A508 is a sign label in its catalog, also listed as GORILA A508. Linear A's earliest attestation is placed in Middle Minoan IIA. The surviving A508 examples discussed here date to Late Minoan IB and appear mainly at Ayia Triadha, with examples from Khania and the Villa at Knossos, on lists of goods.

At Ayia Triadha, records tracked produce gathered for an estate and its distribution as rations or wages, or its delivery as tax to Phaistos. A508–A511 appear alongside agricultural goods in whole and fractional quantities. That supports inventory or commodity notation; it does not identify what A508 itself denotes.

Do not call A508 the saffron sign

Jo Day proposed that the A508–A511 group corresponds to Linear B CROC, a sign conventionally linked to saffron. Schoep proposed a different agricultural product, perhaps an herb or spice such as coriander. Calling A508 “the saffron sign” turns a proposal into a translation.

In 2025, Salgarella, Bellinato, and Ferrara suggested that A508 on tablet HT 33 may be a vessel-shaped logogram—a sign representing an item or category—but said no logogram on that tablet is identified with certainty. The vessel proposal is another hypothesis, not a settled reading.

What is A508 related to?

Researchers compare A508 with A509, A510, and A511 as a four-form group in the Linear A sign set. Unicode's encoding proposal lists AB016 and AB027 as graphic components of A508; those component labels describe how its drawn form is constructed, not what Minoans read or meant by it.

Linear A has historical links to Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Minoan script, and to later Linear B. Much of Linear A's graphic repertoire may have been adapted from Cretan Hieroglyphic; much of Linear B's was derived from Linear A. Similar shapes invite comparison, but do not establish one-to-one descent or the same sound or meaning.

Use A508 as the catalog identifier for a Minoan sign; its ancient reading is not settled.

Call saffron a proposal, not A508's translation.

Why does 𐚹 show as a square?

A square can mean the font cannot render this character; it is not a second historical form. In 2026, Noto Sans Linear A lists coverage for Linear A, but without a suitable font or fallback, a missing character may appear as a box or blank.
