What 𐛆 means

No word reading for A526 is confirmed as of 2026. Linear A remains undeciphered, so adding the conventional labels of its components would produce a proposal, not a translation.

On HT 33, a clay tablet from Haghia Triada dated to Late Minoan IB, A526 appears among unidentified signs beside small quantities of agricultural goods. As of 2026, it is not securely identified as a container, commodity, name, or syllable. If someone sends it to you, the honest decode is “a Linear A sign,” not a fixed word.

Where did Linear A come from?

Linear A developed on Crete and spread through the Aegean. It is attested from the 18th to the 14th centuries BCE. The script appears to have developed locally, perhaps drawing on broad Near Eastern writing principles, then spread to parts of the Aegean during the Second Palace period.

Most surviving inscriptions are clay accounting records for goods and people. Others appear on stone vessels, figurines, metal, and buildings, including religious settings; the modern labels “administrative” and “ritual” need not have marked separate parts of ancient life. Linear B later became the main accounting script; the last known Linear A testimony dates to around 1350 BCE.

Is A526 a readable syllable or word?

Its component labels do not provide a confirmed reading. Unicode catalogs A526 as a composite sign built from AB038 and AB077, but component names are not sounds or translations by themselves.

Linear B is a later script developed from Linear A, and the two share many syllable signs. Scholars use some Linear B values as practical sound labels for Linear A, but a shared shape does not prove a shared sound. As of 2026, A526 itself is not securely established as a Linear B carry-over. Cretan Hieroglyphic overlapped with Linear A and shares a limited sign inventory; that does not prove it was A526's ancestor.
