Linear A Sign A542

214/341

𐛕 is the catalogued composite Linear A sign A542, but no secure ancient reading or translation is known. The Minoans used Linear A for records and inscriptions on Crete; in modern writing, A542 identifies that exact sign in catalogues and Unicode text. Its listed parts—AB65, A317, and AB78—do not reveal what the whole sign meant.

What 𐛕 means

It has no secure ancient reading or translation.

𐛕 is the catalogued composite Linear A sign A542, also listed in the GORILA sign catalogue. No secure Minoan word or sound can be assigned to it.

The Minoans used Linear A, a writing system, on Crete. The earliest known Linear A inscriptions are placed in Middle Minoan IIA, a period in Crete’s history, by the end of the nineteenth century BCE. Clay tablets tracked goods and transactions; offering tables, vessels, pins, rings, and other objects carried formulaic or cultic inscriptions, and some objects may have been private.

Later, Linear B adapted much of Linear A’s sign repertoire, and Cypro-Minoan probably developed from Linear A. Cretan Hieroglyphic is a related, partly contemporary Cretan script, but it is not established as a one-to-one source for A542.

Is A542 a composite sign?

Yes. Catalogues record three components, but that does not reveal a reading.

𐛕 is catalogued as AB65 A317 AB78. That breakdown describes the sign’s graphic composition; it is not a deciphered spelling or sound. The pieces do not tell us how ancient readers pronounced or understood the whole sign.

Technical and scholarly: it identifies a catalogued sign, not a readable Minoan sentence.

Do not turn the catalogue label into a translated Minoan word.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐛕 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Linear A block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
