What 𐛟 means
As of 2026, 𐛟 has no secure ancient reading or pronunciation. A555 is a catalog identifier in the GORILA sign list; the label does not spell out a sound or translate a word.
Linear A seems to have developed on Crete, drawing in part on Near Eastern writing practices. Its surviving record runs from the 18th century BCE through the 14th century BCE, across Crete and other Aegean places. Clay tablets record goods; stone offering tables and some religious or funerary objects show other uses. As Linear B emerged, it took over Linear A’s administrative role. Linear B is its clearest descendant; Cypro-Minoan and the Cypriot syllabaries are also linked to it by contact or proposed derivation. These are relationships between scripts; they do not decode 𐛟.
Why does 𐛟 show as a box?
A box usually means the font or app cannot draw the character. The text can still contain 𐛟 when no available font has a glyph for it. Depending on fallback, it may instead appear as a question mark or blank. That is a display failure, not a different Linear A sign.
Use 𐛟 as a reference to the character, not as a word with a confirmed ancient message.
Do not call A555 a translated Minoan word; it is a catalog label.
