linear a sign a570

Linear A Sign A570

234/341

𐛩 is a Linear A sign, a Minoan script, catalogued as A570, but no secure word-level meaning or sound is known. Linear A was used in Bronze Age Crete and nearby Aegean communities for records and offerings. In modern text, it identifies the sign, not a readable Minoan word.

What 𐛩 means

A570 is a catalogue label, not a translated word. Linear A remains undeciphered, so 𐛩 has no secure word-level meaning or sound. The label identifies this sign in the GORILA catalogue, an inventory of Linear A signs, not what a Bronze Age writer said.

Linear A is attested on Crete and nearby Aegean sites from the 18th to 14th centuries BCE. It has no known predecessor outside Crete and was probably a local creation, partly inspired by writing systems of the Near East (western Asia). Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan script, was partly contemporary; shared bookkeeping signs point to exchange, not direct descent.

What was Linear A used for?

Many surviving inscriptions are on clay tablets, roundels (small clay pieces), and sealings (clay marks on goods or documents), where scribes recorded commodities and transactions. Stone offering tables carry repetitive texts, probably religious; marks on storage vessels may have served an economic purpose.

The object gives context: an archive points to administration, while a sanctuary or funerary object points to dedication or ritual. Linear B later took over administrative writing; the last reported Linear A inscription dates to about 1350 BCE.

Why does 𐛩 look like a compound sign?

Its component links do not reveal a reading. Unicode’s chart associates A570 with 𐙇 (A100-102) and 𐙣 (A313A) as possible components. Because Linear A is undeciphered, their order—and the sign’s sound or meaning—cannot be recovered confidently.

Linear B, used to write an early form of Greek, developed from Linear A. Cypro-Minoan, a Bronze Age Cypriot script, and the later Cypriot syllabaries also show contact and probable descent from Linear A. These script relationships do not supply A570’s meaning.

Specialist and archival: use it as a sign specimen in transcription or script discussion, not as a universal conversational symbol.

Don’t label it as a known Minoan word, deity, or sound.

Why does 𐛩 show as a box?

It can: Unicode assigns character identities, but the font supplies the glyph. If your active font lacks Linear A coverage, the app may show an empty box or fallback glyph.
