What 𐛼 means
Its standalone meaning and sound are not securely known. A589 is a catalog label for the sign, not a translated Minoan word.
The earliest secure evidence for Linear A dates to Middle Minoan IIA, a period of Bronze Age Crete, no later than the end of the nineteenth century BCE. This is the earliest secure evidence, not a known date of invention. Early texts served palace administration, including records of goods. Later inscriptions also appear on offering tables, vessels, pins, figurines, and objects linked with ritual or burial. Linear A later became the predominant script in the Aegean.
Is A589 a composite sign?
Yes, in the sign catalogue; that does not decode it. SigLA lists A589 as AB131a combined with AB31, and the Unicode chart records the same construction. The parts describe the sign’s graphic form, not a known spoken value.
The relationship between Linear A and Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan writing system, is debated; comparison of their sign shapes supports broad adaptation between the two repertoires. The later Aegean script Linear B drew much of its sign repertoire from Linear A. These historical connections do not establish A589’s sound.
It reads as specialist or archival writing, not ordinary prose.
Do not present A589 as a translated Minoan word.
