linear b syllable b020 zo

Linear B syllable zo

60/88

In Linear B, 𐀿 is the sign for a syllable in Mycenaean Greek; modern scholars write its value as “zo.” The script survives chiefly in Bronze Age palace records, where this sign formed part of a word. The spelling does not settle its ancient sound: its first consonant may have been a joined sound like “dz” or “ts.”

What 𐀿 means

It records a syllable inside a word, not an object. Linear B is a syllabary: its signs write syllables. Scholars conventionally transliterate this one as “zo,” but that label does not fix its exact ancient sound.

Linear B adapted the earlier Linear A script to write Mycenaean Greek. Most surviving texts are palace inventories and accounts, so this sign appears within words in an administrative record tradition.

The z-series may have represented a joined consonant such as “dz” or “ts,” so “zo” is a scholarly reading, not a certain ancient sound. Linear B writes open syllables; scribes could omit a consonant in a cluster or add a vowel that was not spoken. Its spellings therefore do not map letter for letter onto Greek.

Where did 𐀿 come from?

The earliest known archive is at Knossos on Crete. It is the Room of the Chariot Tablets at the palace; its absolute date is debated.

One proposal connects Linear B’s catalogue sign *20 to a Linear A sign used as a logogram—a mark for a whole word or category. The proposal does not establish that the two signs had the same sound.

At the script level, Linear B is connected with the later Cypriot syllabary, another ancient syllable-writing system. That history connects scripts; it does not make 𐀿 itself a Cypriot or modern Greek letter.

Specialist and archival; in modern writing it signals interest in Linear B or scholarly transliteration.

In ordinary Latin text, zo is two letters; 𐀿 is a Linear B syllable sign.
