linear b syllable b021 qi

Linear B Syllable B021 Qi

𐀥 is the Linear B sign transcribed qi — one syllable of the script Mycenaean palaces used for bookkeeping. The twist: in flock tallies the identical mark stood for a sheep. If it lands in a chat, someone is quoting the script, not reacting.

What 𐀥 means

The syllable qi — though the same drawing can also mean a sheep. Inside a spelled Mycenaean word it is phonetic: one of Linear B's q-series signs, which wrote the labialized velar consonants later Greek lost. Followed by a numeral in a livestock record, it counts the animals.

Context does the choosing, not the shape — scribes used the identical sign for both jobs. Modern editions therefore catalogue this one character as syllable B021 and as the B106 sheep ideogram; the record around it tells you which reading applies.

What does it mean when someone sends 𐀥?

A script reference, not a reaction. Nobody drops a Mycenaean syllable into a chat by accident — the sender is quoting a tablet, studying Linear B, or checking whether your font can draw it. Ask which job the sign is doing: the syllable or the sheep.

Where did 𐀥 come from?

It grew out of Linear A. Scribes adapted the older Minoan script to write Greek; chronology work places Knossos's Room of the Chariot Tablets among the earliest surviving Linear B deposits, in Late Minoan II–IIIA1 — though absolute dating is still debated.

The tablets were palace paperwork: inventories tracking people, rations, land, labour, metals — and livestock, which is where this sign's second career begins.

The ancestry is documented, not just visual: Linear A's AB021 is catalogued with sheep, while this Linear B form is catalogued as both syllable B021 and the B106 sheep ideogram. By the Classical Greek period the q-series consonants had disappeared, so qi is a reconstructed sound, not a living letter.

Specialist script sign; outside classics talk it reads as decoration, so give it a caption.

A lone 𐀥 cannot tell you whether the sender means qi or sheep.

Tablet-style “sheep 1”: ideogram plus Aegean numeral one, the way scribes wrote tallies.

Worth knowing

  • The tablets resisted reading until 1952, when architect Michael Ventris showed the script was Greek — a language nobody expected on “Minoan” Crete.

Will 𐀥 display in every font?

No. Very few fonts cover Linear B, and documented InDesign CC 2020–2022 failures left characters coded but invisible. A blank box usually means a font problem, not the wrong character.

Is 𐀥 the Chinese qi symbol?

No. Chinese qi — the life-force concept — is written 气 (simplified) or 氣 (traditional), a completely different script. This sign is just transcribed qi by Linear B scholars.
