linear b syllable b045 de

Linear B syllable De (B045)

𐀆 is the Linear B syllable sign conventionally read as “de” (B045). It records one consonant-and-vowel syllable inside a word, not a whole word. Linear B was adapted from Linear A to write Mycenaean Greek and survives mainly in palace records.

What 𐀆 means

It writes the syllable “de” inside a word. This Linear B syllabogram (a sign for a spoken syllable), B045, records a consonant followed by a vowel; because it ends in a vowel, it is called an open syllable. Read it with neighboring signs as part of a word, not as a standalone alphabet letter.

Linear B also used ideograms: signs that represented goods or other things rather than sounds. 𐀆 belongs to the sound-writing set.

What does it mean when someone sends it?

Treat it as a script reference unless the sender gives more context. Sent alone, 𐀆 most safely points to Linear B, Mycenaean Greek, or the syllable “de.” It has no built-in modern message meaning; ask what word or context the sender intends if they expect more.

Where did this sign come from?

The oldest surviving Linear B deposits are from Knossos. They date to slightly before the beginning of the 14th century BCE.

Linear B adapted an earlier Linear A model to write Mycenaean Greek, an early form of Greek. Its surviving clay records are palace administration: lists of goods and quantities, plus records involving people and their movement. They are formulaic paperwork, not a dictionary of each sign's independent meaning.

How Linear A, Linear B, and Cypro-Minoan are related is debated. One reconstruction treats Linear A as the template for both Linear B and Cypro-Minoan; another allows Cypro-Minoan to descend from Linear B, with the later Cypriot syllabary descending from Cypro-Minoan. After the palatial collapse around 1200 BCE, Linear B disappeared as a living administrative script. Unicode preserves 𐀆's syllabic identity; it does not give the sign a new word meaning.

Why does 𐀆 appear as a box?

Font support. If an app lacks a font with Linear B coverage, it may show a box, question mark, or blank space. A supporting font changes the display, not the character.
