Linear B syllable je

12/88

𐀋 is the Linear B sign read as “je,” a syllable ending in a vowel, used to write Mycenaean Greek. It supplies a sound inside a word; modern readers encounter it in transcriptions, script displays, or historical-looking design. Its form comes through the older Linear A tradition, whose sound value for this sign is uncertain.

What 𐀋 means

It represents the syllable “je” within a written word.

In Linear B, 𐀋 is read as je, a syllable that ends in a vowel. Linear B writes Mycenaean Greek by combining signs for vowels or consonant-vowel syllables, so this sign supplies a sound within a word, not an idea by itself.

When it appears alone in a modern message, it is best read as a sample of Linear B or as decoration; any personal message depends on context.

Where did Linear B get this sign?

Linear B adapted its sign tradition from Linear A.

Linear A was used for the Minoan language around 1800–1450 BCE. Linear B adapted that script tradition to write Mycenaean Greek around 1400–1190 BCE. The earliest surviving Linear B group at Knossos dates to the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 14th century BCE.

Mycenaean palace officials used Linear B for bookkeeping: records of commodities, incoming and outgoing goods, labor, land, and other transactions. That setting explains why 𐀋 contributes a syllable to a written record instead of standing alone as an emblem.

What is known about the Linear A connection?

Linear B reads 𐀋 as “je”; Linear A does not give a secure equivalent.

The corresponding Linear A sign is catalogued as AB 46, but its sound value is uncertain. As of 2026, Linear A’s language remains undeciphered.

One Oxford proposal traces the shape through cursive Egyptian signs that could resemble walking legs and then to a Cretan motion word. This is a proposed explanation for its ancestry, not a reading of the Linear B sign. The Aegean writing tradition also includes the later Cypriot syllabary; Linear B wrote Greek but did not become the Greek alphabet.

It reads as a historical-script sample; the surrounding message gives it any decorative or personal tone.

Do not treat “je” as a complete word or reaction on its own.

Does 𐀋 mean walking legs?

No. Walking legs appears in a proposal about the sign’s ancestry; it is not the Linear B reading, which is je.

Why does 𐀋 show as a box?
