What 𐀶 means
It is the syllabogram tu, not a standalone word. A syllabogram is a sign for a syllable; tu is the conventional transliteration of its sound value.
The three-sign spelling 𐀶𐀏𐀳 is conventionally read tu-ka-te and linked to the Mycenaean Greek word thygatēr, “daughter.” Here, 𐀶 supplies only the first syllable.
How did 𐀶 fit into Bronze Age records?
Linear B was adapted from Linear A to write Mycenaean Greek. The Room of the Chariot Tablets at Knossos is the earliest known archive, dated LM II or early LM IIIA1, labels in the Late Minoan archaeological chronology. The earliest known Linear B tablet from mainland Greece, found at Iklaina, dates to around 1450–1400 BCE.
Palace scribes pressed signs into clay tablets to track commodities, inventories, people, animals, and manufactured goods. Most surviving Linear B inscriptions are administrative records, so this sign reaches us in lists and accounts rather than a surviving literary passage.
Context changes its job. In tu-ka-te, 𐀶 opens a word; before MUL, the Linear B sign for “woman,” it can serve as a phonetic adjunct and may abbreviate tu-ka-te (“daughter”) in a personnel entry. Linear B is historically connected through Cypro-Minoan with the later Cypriot syllabary, which may descend from it.
What if my font or keyboard cannot handle 𐀶?
A square usually means missing font support. Linear B needs a font that contains this glyph; older text fields may also mishandle characters beyond Unicode’s basic range.
Scholarly and typographic; it signals Linear B study or historical-script styling.
Do not read the single sign as “daughter”; that association belongs to a larger context.

Questions people ask
2Why does 𐀶 show as a square?
Usually, the font lacks this Linear B glyph. The character sits beyond Unicode’s basic range, so some older or non-Unicode text fields may fail before a font can draw it.
Is tu an exact pronunciation?
No. Tu is a conventional transliteration of the sign’s syllabic value; Linear B records Mycenaean Greek imperfectly, so this sign alone cannot establish the exact spoken sound.
