lycian letter m

Lycian letter M

15/29

𐊎 is the ordinary Lycian letter for the m sound: inside a word it marks that sound, but alone it is not a word. Lycian writing survives mainly in inscriptions—writing carved on tombs and monuments—and on coins and other objects. On screen, font support determines whether its exact form appears; typing it requires Unicode-aware input.

What 𐊎 means

It marks the m sound, as in “moon.” Read 𐊎 together with the other letters in a Lycian spelling.

To enter 𐊎 digitally, use a Unicode hex input method and enter 1028E for U1028E; the shortcut varies by operating system and app.

How did the Lycian alphabet develop?

The Lycian alphabet adapted Greek models to write the Lycian language. Some signs were borrowed or reshaped; extra signs wrote sounds Greek did not have. The exact route of influence is debated, and some signs may also reflect neighboring Lydian or Carian traditions.

The oldest reported examples are brief scratched writings dated to the seventh and sixth centuries BCE; most surviving examples are from the fifth and fourth centuries BCE. Lycian texts marked tombs and burial instructions and also appear on monuments, coins, ceramics, and metal objects.

On monuments carrying both Lycian and Greek texts, Lycian could express local or official identity, while Greek could provide a parallel translation or public prestige. Each pairing’s role depends on its wording and layout.

Academic and inscriptional; alone, it reads as a letter sample.

By itself, it is not a complete Lycian word.

Why does 𐊎 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Lycian block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
