What 𐊑 means
It is a Lycian letter for a nasal sound. Scholarly transliteration writes it as ñ. Its exact analysis is debated: some descriptions treat it as a nasal that forms a syllable by itself; others place it in a wider sound sequence or at the end of a syllable.
The Lycian alphabet adapted Greek writing for the Lycian language, adding signs for sounds Greek lacked. Some scholars suggest that neighboring Carian and Lydian scripts also contributed signs, though those links are uncertain.
Two graffiti, N300a and N300b, are dated to the sixth and seventh centuries BCE, respectively; their proposed connection to Rhodes is uncertain. A pottery jar from Patara dated around 500 BCE is also described as one of the earliest inscriptions. Most surviving examples date to the fifth and fourth centuries BCE.
Why do Lycian inscriptions use it?
They recorded Lycian words on graves, monuments, coins, and dedications. Tomb texts could identify builders or families and set burial instructions or penalties for damage.
At Xanthos, a tall public pillar carries a long Lycian inscription and a Greek epigram. A fourth-century BCE dedication at the Letoon sanctuary near Xanthos is in Lycian, Greek, and Aramaic. After Alexander the Great conquered Lycia, Lycian writing faded as Greek gained ground.
Is 𐊑 the same as ñ?
No. ñ is its scholarly transliteration. The Latin letter ñ represents 𐊑 in scholarly editions; it is not the original Lycian glyph. The forms serve different jobs: use 𐊑 when writing Lycian script and ñ when following a Latin transliteration.
