Meroitic Cursive Letter Ka

19/90

𐦲 is a letter, not a symbol with a message: it spells the sound /ka/ in Meroitic, the right-to-left alphabet of ancient Kush. Scholars write it as k. Few fonts include it, so seeing or typing it usually takes a dedicated font or keyboard.

What 𐦲 means

The sound /ka/ — it's a letter, not a picture. In the Meroitic alphabet of the Kingdom of Kush, in what is now Sudan, consonant signs carried a built-in /a/ unless a vowel letter followed, so this sign reads as the syllable /ka/, which scholars write as k.

On its own it is a piece of a word, not a whole word or a coded message. Meroitic runs right to left, and in running text the letter i usually fuses with the consonant before it — the only letter that joins — so a real sequence can look different from the isolated glyph here.

Where did this letter come from?

It arrived inside Kush's own alphabet, adapted from Egyptian handwriting. The Meroitic script grew out of Demotic — the fast everyday handwriting of late Egyptian — and the earliest known cursive text is dated to about 200 BCE. The letter for /ka/ has no recorded inventor; it was part of ancient Kushite writing from the start.

Its job was everyday writing: documents and letters, labels and accounts, funerary texts, and royal stelae — inscribed stone slabs. A hieroglyphic form of Meroitic handled prestige carving on temples and royal monuments; "cursive" describes the style, not the material, since cursive signs were also cut into stone.

The script died out in the fifth century CE; three of its signs lived on in the medieval Old Nubian script. Through all of that, this one stayed what it is: a phonetic letter for /ka/, never a picture or an emblem.

Questions people ask

3

Is 𐦲 an emoji?

No. It's a Meroitic letter — a sign for a sound — with no emoji artwork and no fixed picture.

Can anyone actually read Meroitic?

The letters, yes — their sound values are known. The Meroitic language itself is only partly understood, so a word written with 𐦲 can usually be pronounced but not always translated.

Can I use 𐦲 as a fancy letter k?

Not really. Scholars write it as k, but inside Latin text it's an ancient-script code point most devices can't display.
