meroitic cursive letter ne

Meroitic Cursive Letter Ne

11/90

𐦪 is the Meroitic cursive sign for the syllable conventionally transliterated “ne”; its built-in vowel is e. Cursive Meroitic served general writing in Kush, while Meroitic hieroglyphs appeared on royal monuments and temples. Meroitic is only partly understood, so “ne” is a scholarly transliteration, not an English word.

What 𐦪 means

It marks the fixed Meroitic syllable conventionally transliterated ne. Most Meroitic consonant signs carry an unwritten a; this sign has e built in. “Ne” is a scholarly reading label, not an English translation, and Meroitic remains only partly understood.

Meroitic cursive was the general-use writing of Kush, an ancient Nubian kingdom. It developed under the influence of Egyptian Demotic, a cursive Egyptian script. Meroitic hieroglyphs served royal monuments and temples. The earliest dated Meroitic inscriptions are from around 180 BCE.

Nubian gradually replaced Meroitic after the fourth century CE; by the sixth century, Coptic writing had superseded the Meroitic scripts. Old Nubian later combined Greek and Coptic letters with some signs borrowed from Meroitic cursive; that borrowing does not make each Meroitic letter an Old Nubian equivalent.

How do I type 𐦪?

Use Unicode-hex input if your editor supports it. Enter 109AA and convert it; the exact steps vary by editor.

Keep 𐦪 as one Meroitic sign in a transcription. “Ne” is its label, not a Latin-letter substitute.

How is 𐦪 different from its hieroglyphic counterpart?

They are separate Meroitic signs for ne in different registers. The cursive and hieroglyphic registers use distinct sign forms.

Meroitic is written right to left. In cursive, only the sign transliterated i normally joins the preceding consonant; other letters, including 𐦪, keep separate shapes.

Why does 𐦪 show as a box?

It means your current font or renderer cannot display the glyph. Try one with Meroitic coverage; the box is a fallback, not another Meroitic letter.

Why is 𐦪 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
