What does ᴮ mean in UPA?
In UPA, it marks a very short B-series sound.
The Uralic Phonetic Alphabet is a system for recording pronunciation, sound patterns, and word histories in work on Uralic languages. Eemil Nestor Setälä published it in 1901; it was formalized in 1902. The system also appears in descriptions of Turkic and Mongolic languages.
The B series distinguishes ordinary B, small-capital ʙ, and superscript forms, including capital superscript ᴮ.
Is ᴮ the same as ʙ?
No. ʙ is small-capital B; ᴮ is a raised modifier.
In UPA, small capitals such as ʙ mark a voicing distinction; superscripting marks a very short sound. UPA guidance chose capital superscripts because capital and small-capital superscripts were hard to distinguish in type. Follow the notation's legend rather than swapping forms by appearance.
