What ᴺ means
Read its system and place in the transcription.
The Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA) uses superscript letters for very short sounds or transitions. It records sounds in Uralic languages, a family that includes Finnish and Hungarian. A Unicode proposal in 2002 said UPA had already been used for more than a century; it sought plain-text characters to preserve phonetic detail in searchable text. The 2003 date marks this character’s encoding, not the start of the notation.
Is ᴺ the same as ⁿ or ɴ?
No; similar shapes do not make them interchangeable.
ⁿ is a raised lowercase n. IPA uses it for a brief nasal release after a consonant. Pe̍h-ōe-jī, a Latin-letter spelling system for Hokkien, puts ⁿ after a vowel to show nasalization: air also flows through the nose. That Hokkien mark is ⁿ, not this capital ᴺ.
ɴ sits on the baseline. In IPA it represents a voiced nasal made near the uvula, the small part of the throat behind the tongue.
Technical notation. In casual chat, a lone ᴺ can look like specialist text without a shared legend.
Hokkien’s raised lowercase ⁿ is not this capital form.
