What ᵸ means
It marks the preceding sound as nasalized. In linguistic transcription of languages from the Caucasus, this superscript en is a Cyrillic-script way to show nasalization. It can also appear inside Bezhta and Godoberi words as part of their spelling, rather than as an editor's note.
A 1977 transcription of Chechen, Ingush, and Bats already uses the character. Its role as a nasalization cue also has parallels in other script traditions: Latin ⁿ and Georgian modifier Nar ჼ. These are related not by appearance, but by the notation they provide.
Why is ᵸ not just a superscript n?
It is a separate Cyrillic character, not formatting.
Latin ⁿ is a parallel notation, not a substitute. The ordinary Cyrillic letter н stays ordinary н when formatting makes it smaller or raises it. Some font designs make ᵸ resemble ᴴ, the modifier letter capital H, so match the character in the source rather than its silhouette.
Specialist phonetic notation; in Bezhta and Godoberi it can also be part of a word's spelling.
When transcribing, keep the source's script: ⁿ and ᵸ are not interchangeable.

Questions people ask
2Why does ᵸ look like a tiny H?
Some font designs make it resemble ᴴ. It is the Cyrillic en modifier, while ᴴ is a different character.
Can I replace ᵸ with ⁿ?
No, when reproducing a source. ⁿ is Latin superscript n; use the character and script shown in the source.
