Ogham letter Eabhadh

21/28

ᚕ, called Eabhadh, has no single reading across Ogham traditions: Irish inscriptions can give it k, Scottish ones e, and medieval lists EA/EO. A standalone ᚕ is usually Ogham styling, not a sound you can identify without context.

What ᚕ means

Its reading changes with the Ogham tradition.

The earliest surviving Ogham evidence dates to the late fourth or early fifth century. In Irish inscriptions, Eabhadh can carry a k sound: the sequence ᚕᚑᚔ is a fixed formula meaning “here,” written in Latin letters as koi. Scottish inscriptions can use it for e, while medieval manuscript lists give it the supplementary value EA/EO. Search labels like “Ogham K” and “Ogham EA” point to different historical readings, not one fixed sound.

Ogham was devised to write early Irish; surviving stone inscriptions chiefly preserve personal-name formulas.

Why does Eabhadh have different readings?

Its readings followed different inscriptional and manuscript traditions.

Scholars link Ogham’s design to familiarity with Latin writing, but the place, date, and motive of its invention remain unsettled. From the 8th century onward, Roman script increasingly replaced Ogham on Irish monuments, while learned scribes reshaped spelling practices and expanded the letter set.

Ogham inscriptions also occur in Wales, Cornwall, and Pictland. Some British stones pair them with longer Latin or Brittonic text, linking Ogham to regional bilingual inscription traditions.

What does Eabhadh signal in modern use?

Modern revival Ogham chiefly writes modern Irish and English.

The modern Ogham revival uses the script chiefly for modern Irish and English, rather than the early Irish of the old inscriptions.

Historic carvings include X-shaped and separated-stroke forms; a Unicode proposal also records a separate disjoined Eabhadh variant. Fonts show a typographic form, not one universal carving pattern.

Standalone Eabhadh reads as specialist or Celtic revival styling; its sound needs a stated language and historical setting.

Don’t assign Eabhadh a fixed “E” without knowing whether you’re reading an inscription or a manuscript list.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ᚕ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
