What ᚑ means
It marks the O sound inside an Ogham spelling. On its own, ᚑ gives a letter value; the other letters make the word.
Is Onn ash or gorse? A medieval Irish list matching letter-names with plants gives furze, also called gorse. Irish-language scholar Damian McManus argues that Onn means ash. These are competing explanations of the letter-name, not extra meanings the letter adds to every word.
When does Ogham first appear?
The earliest datable Ogham objects are from the late fourth century. Its main monumental tradition flourished in the fifth–seventh centuries.
Ogham took shape in contact with Latin writing and grammatical learning. Why was Ogham carved? Its surviving stone inscriptions mainly record commemorative names and family descent; some also mark land boundaries or express claims to power. Burial is plausible in some cases, but the archaeological context does not show that every Ogham stone was a grave marker.
On a stone, Ogham strokes cross a long central line, often the stone’s edge, and are commonly read upward from the bottom. In medieval manuscripts, Irish scholars studied Ogham through grammar and memory aids, and sometimes used it for cryptic writing. Digital text may run horizontally; whether a font draws the central line is font-dependent.
Someone sent me ᚑ—what should I read?
Start with its letter value: O. A lone ᚑ may stand for a letter, decorate a name, or point to an Ogham spelling. It does not identify a whole word or settle which plant gloss the sender intends; ask for context.
In twentieth- and twenty-first-century revivals, Ogham has been used to write Modern Irish and English and to signal Gaelic or broader Celtic identity. A modern use can therefore be a spelling choice or cultural styling rather than a reference to the old plant gloss.
It reads as an Ogham letter; ash and gorse are historical explanations of the name Onn.
A lone ᚑ does not choose between the ash and gorse explanations; ask what the sender means.

1Questions people ask
2Is ᚑ a rune?
No. Ogham and runes are separate writing systems. Ogham is alphabetic and developed in contact with Latin writing; Irish manuscripts sometimes discuss it among cryptic scripts.
Why does an Ogham font show a stemline?
It is font-dependent. Some typefaces draw a long central line to evoke how Ogham lettering was arranged on stones; others omit it. The letter value stays the same.
