phaistos disc sign dove

Phaistos Disc Sign Dove

32/46

𐇯 is a bird-shaped sign from the Phaistos Disc, a fired-clay disc from Bronze Age Crete whose stamped spiral text has never been deciphered. “Dove” is a modern catalog label, not a translation — and not a peace dove either.

What 𐇯 means

An undeciphered Phaistos Disc sign — “dove” is a catalog nickname. The disc uses 45 sign types, catalogued by number: this bird is sign 32. Scholars named each picture after what it resembles, and this one has also been published as a goose or a duck. No accepted decipherment gives it a confirmed sound or meaning.

The disc is a palm-sized slab of fired clay, excavated in 1908 in a storeroom of the Minoan palace at Phaistos, Crete. Its purpose is unsettled: ritual or magical use is one serious proposal, deliberate pseudo-writing another.

Is 𐇯 part of a known script?

It belongs to its own script, which nobody has read. The disc is effectively its only text; a shorter inscription on a bronze axe from Arkalochori may share a few signs. Comparisons with Cretan hieroglyphic and Linear A and B yield parallels, not proven descent.

The bird is unlike the dove sign of Cretan hieroglyphic writing; one proposal points to a bird on a Knossos fresco, perhaps a partridge. No continuous later tradition is documented for this exact sign — only the modern labels changed.

Why does 𐇯 look backwards?

The disc reads inward; Unicode draws the signs left-to-right. On the clay, the text spirals from rim to centre and the signs turn with it. Unicode stores the block left-to-right for scholarly discussion, so 𐇯 can appear facing the other way — a transcription convention, not a second sign.

Specialist and archival — Phaistos Disc and undeciphered-script talk, not dove-emoji warmth.

Not for peace or sympathy — “dove” is a label, not a decoded message.

A catalogued sign (number 32) in an undeciphered sequence; “dove” names the picture.

Worth knowing

  • Every sign went in with a reusable stamp — the disc is often called an early exercise in printing, millennia before movable type.
  • Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier unearthed the disc while working at the palace of Phaistos.

Questions people ask

3

Is the 𐇯 bird a real dove?

Not certain — scholars have also read it as a goose or duck; without a decipherment “dove” remains a guess.

Is 𐇯 a peace symbol?

No. It has no fixed chat meaning — for peace, send the dove emoji or instead.

How old is the Phaistos Disc?

Nobody knows the exact century: it is usually placed in the second millennium BC, in Middle or Late Minoan Crete.
