Phaistos Disc Mattock Sign

15/46

“Mattock” is a catalog label for 𐇞, not a decoded word. In a modern text, it points most safely to the Phaistos Disc or its undeciphered signs. The Unicode Standard’s scholarly layout mirrors this representative glyph from its appearance on the disc.

What 𐇞 means

No: “mattock” is a pictorial catalog label, not a decoded word. The mattock sign on the Phaistos Disc is catalogued as sign 15, also called “mattock or pick.” The name describes a tool-like picture; a mattock is a hand tool for breaking ground. As of 2024, no verified word-value is known for 𐇞. Treat it as a mark in an undeciphered inscription, not an ancient word you can translate on its own.

The disc’s signs were stamped into fresh clay with prepared forms and set in spiral groups, conventionally read from the outer rim inward. That position gives 𐇞 a place in a written sequence, but cannot tell us whether it named a tool, represented a sound, or had another function.

What was the Phaistos Disc made for?

Its original purpose remains unresolved. The disc was found at Phaistos on 3 July 1908. Comparisons with Cretan pottery and seals place it broadly in the 18th–17th centuries BCE, although its find context was disturbed. As of 2024, published records list 𐇞 once on the disc and establish no earlier example.

Proposals include a religious text or a calendar, but neither is verified. Whether its marks are writing at all also remains unsettled, so archaeology has not established why it was made.

Is 𐇞 related to Linear A?

A historical connection is possible, but none is confirmed. As of 2024, parts of the sign set had been compared with Cretan Hieroglyphic and Linear A; the comparison with the Arkalochori axe remained disputed. Linear B also appears as a comparison, not a confirmed key. These proposals do not give 𐇞 a Linear A reading.

A visual resemblance or proposed script connection does not show that the systems are interchangeable or that one can decipher the other.

Archival and specialist; an unexplained standalone send needs context.

“Mattock” is a picture label, not a known ancient translation.

Why does 𐇞 face the other way in Unicode?

Because the Unicode Standard assigns these signs strong left-to-right directionality for scholarly text, its representative glyphs are mirrored from their appearance on the disc, whose spiral is conventionally read from the outer rim inward.
