What 𐇴 means
Nothing provable: the Phaistos Disc has never been deciphered.
The sign exists on exactly one object: a clay disc stamped with 45 distinct symbols, found in the Minoan palace at Phaistos on Crete in 1908 and dated by archaeological comparison to around 1750 BCE. Since no second inscription in this writing has surfaced, nothing ties 𐇴 to a known word, sound, or ancestor. Every “reading” of it is a guess.
What was the Phaistos Disc for?
Nobody knows: no explanation has won scholarly consensus.
The disc belongs to a stamping culture: its signs were pressed into wet clay with ready-made punches, like the seal impressions and marked pottery of the period. A 2021 archaeological reading sees in the repeated sign groups a religious or magical text made for display, ruling out gameboard, calendar, or bookkeeping readings. That is a whole-disc hypothesis, not a decipherment of 𐇴.
Why is it called papyrus?
It looks like a papyrus stalk; the name is modern guesswork.
The labels come from catalogues, not decipherment: the names in use trace to a sign list published by archaeologist Louis Godart in 1995, which keeps Arthur Evans's older numbering, where this sign is 37. Scholars needed something to call each picture, and “papyrus” describes the drawing, not a proven ancient word.
Two caveats. Fonts follow the left-to-right layout Unicode fixes for scholarly text, while the disc is read in a right-to-left spiral from the rim inward, so a glyph can look mirror-flipped against the stamp without being a different sign. When archaeologists match the stamped signs to Cretan potters' marks, the close example is the comb sign , not this one. To specialists it is a catalogue token; the name is decoration, not a clue.
Specialist and faintly arcane: an archaeology or Unicode citation, not small talk.
Don't read “papyrus” as a translation; nobody has one.

2Worth knowing
- Each sign was pressed in with a ready-made punch and repeats identically: the disc is often called movable-type printing three millennia early.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𐇴 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
