Phoenician Number Three

28/29

𐤛 is the Phoenician sign for the quantity three. It belongs to an additive numeral system, and a lone appearance in a chat most naturally points to three as a historical or technical reference.

Text symbol

What 𐤛 means

It marks a quantity of three, not a spoken sound. Phoenician numerals recorded counts alongside written text.

The earliest cited Phoenician numeral example is the Karatepe inscription, around 750 BCE; it shows a single tally for one, not this exact three-sign. From the seventh century onward, numeral signs appear in records for regnal years and commodities.

Why is 𐤛 its own sign?

It is one grouped unit in an additive system. Phoenician numbers use signs for 1, 2, 3, 10, 20, and 100, combining them to write larger totals from right to left. Three is formed from three one-tallies, but the strokes are grouped as a unit; its value remains three as surrounding notation changes.

The same Unicode repertoire represents related writing traditions: Paleo-Hebrew (an older form of Hebrew writing), Early Aramaic (an early Aramaic script), and Punic (a later Phoenician branch). Imperial Aramaic has a separate sign for three in a related right-to-left system. A 2026 study distinguishes Phoenician–Aramaic numeral practice from an Egyptian-derived Hebrew system; later Hebrew letter-number signs are not alternate spellings of 𐤛.

What does 𐤛 mean in a message?

Read it as three, then ask what it counts. On its own, it does not identify an object, date, or rank; surrounding text must supply that.

Historical and technical; it suits scholarly writing or deliberate ancient-script styling.

𐤂 is the letter Gaml; 𐤛 is the numeral three.
