What 🆐 means
It means “DJ,” short for disc jockey. A disc jockey selects and plays recorded music for an audience.
🆐 packs those two Latin letters into a full-width cell, the roughly square character space used by many Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters; Unicode retained such forms for compatibility with older East Asian character sets. A 2008 Unicode draft already lists the sign as “DJ” for disc jockey; the final chart files it among compact Latin-letter sequences. In 2018, a Noto Sans Symbols v2.000 bug report noted an extra drawn box around 🆐: “square” describes a full-width character cell, while “squared” means the letters are enclosed by a drawn box.

1Why does 🆐 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
