What 🄿 means
It labels progressive broadcasting in Japan’s ARIB digital-TV standard.
ARIB is Japan’s Association of Radio Industries and Businesses; its STD-B24 standard covers digital-TV data broadcasting. “Progressive” means each video frame is drawn in sequence, rather than split into alternating sets of scan lines.
The standard was adopted in 1999, and a Unicode proposal in 2008 on Japanese TV symbols records this exact glyph as its progressive-broadcasting mark. That history gives the boxed P a narrow technical reading; a standalone use does not automatically carry it.
How can I type the boxed P?

3Questions people ask
1Why did the boxed P become a plain P?
NFKC can. Unicode treats the box as a compatibility distinction, which this form of normalization removes; NFC keeps it. A search or storage system applying NFKC may leave only the plain P.
