What means
It writes Albanian’s open a, roughly like the a in “father.”
It is a vowel letter: the Albanian word at (“father”) begins with this sound.
Why did Albanian writers use Todhri?
It gave writers around Elbasan a local alphabet for Albanian. Theodhor Haxhifilipi, known as Dhaskal Todhri (“teacher Todhri”), is traditionally credited with it; accounts differ on whether he devised it or brought it from Voskopojë, where he studied.
Surviving texts include church copybooks and hymns, merchants’ letters, and accounts. A family notebook dated 1780 is the earliest known dated Todhri text. Use persisted locally into the twentieth century, before later Albanian alphabets and standardized spelling displaced it.
Its ancestry has competing explanations: Johann Georg von Hahn proposed Phoenician in 1854; Leopold Geitler linked its forms to Greek and Roman cursive—the quick handwriting styles of those alphabets—in 1883.

If it appears as a box, the active font lacks a Todhri glyph.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
