ugaritic letter samka

Ugaritic Letter Samka

19/31

𐎒 is a letter in Ugaritic, an ancient writing system pressed into clay with wedge-shaped marks. In surviving tablets it appears in words and at the end of some school alphabet lists; scholars debate whether it marked an extra hissing sound or helped spell foreign words. Today it usually appears in historical or scholarly discussion, where an editor’s transcription explains more than the glyph alone.

What 𐎒 means

It was a letter, though its exact sound and job remain disputed. Editors transcribe it as s₂, sometimes s; the subscript distinguishes this sign in scholarly writing. Read the surrounding word and the editor’s convention rather than the glyph alone.

Ugaritic writing was made by pressing wedge-shaped marks into clay. It recorded Ugaritic and also some Hurrian and Akkadian in administrative, literary, religious, legal, letter-writing, and school texts. Samka is a writing sign in that system, not a stand-alone word.

The earliest excavated Ugaritic alphabetic texts at Ras Shamra, an ancient city, were found in 1929. The surviving writing tradition is documented from the 14th to the beginning of the 12th century BCE.

Is samka related to samekh?

A historical link has been proposed, but the signs are not interchangeable. Ugaritic letter order broadly follows the later Phoenician order. Scholars have proposed a connection between Samka and the later Northwest Semitic s tradition, which includes Phoenician semk and the tradition known as samekh.

Some analyses treat Samka as an additional native hissing consonant; others see it mainly as a spelling aid for foreign words. In longer school alphabet lists, it appears after the ordinary sequence, as an extra entry.

What does 𐎒 mean when someone sends it?

Usually, it points to the Ugaritic letter itself. In a discussion of ancient writing, it may identify the sign or represent it in a transcription; the glyph alone does not settle its exact sound. In casual chat, the surrounding words are needed to tell why someone used this specialist character.

Specialist and archival; in ordinary chat it reads as a sample of Ugaritic writing.

Don’t call it simply “samekh”: the historical link is a proposal, and Samka’s exact Ugaritic role remains disputed.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐎒 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
